The Aerocort Inhaler is a prescription combination medication used to manage and prevent symptoms of asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used for sudden asthma attacks.
Active Ingredients and Mechanism
The inhaler contains two active components that work together to improve breathing:
- Beclomethasone Dipropionate (50 mcg per actuation): This is a corticosteroid (steroid medicine) that reduces inflammation, swelling, and irritation in the airways, helping to prevent asthma attacks and flare-ups over time.
- Levosalbutamol (50 mcg per actuation): This is a short-acting bronchodilator that relaxes the smooth muscles in the airways, widening the air passages and providing quicker relief from symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Uses
- Management of asthma symptoms, including wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness.
- Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
- Long-term control and prevention of asthma attacks.
Important Precautions
- Not for sudden attacks: Do not use Aerocort Inhaler to relieve sudden breathing problems. A separate “rescue” inhaler should be used for acute attacks.
- Rinse your mouth: Rinse your mouth and throat with water or brush your teeth after each use to help prevent fungal infections (oral thrush) in the mouth and throat.
- Consistent use: Use the inhaler regularly at the same time each day as prescribed by your doctor, even if you do not have symptoms. Stopping abruptly can worsen your condition.
- Medical conditions: Inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of seizures (fits).
- Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the risks and benefits need to be evaluated.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may interact with the medication and exacerbate side effects.
