The COTRI D.S. TAB (Co-trimoxazole Double Strength Tablet) is a combination antibiotic medication used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is a prescription-only medicine that contains two active ingredients: sulfamethoxazole (800 mg) and trimethoprim (160 mg).
Key Information
  • Active Ingredients: Sulfamethoxazole (800 mg) and Trimethoprim (160 mg).
  • Drug Class: Antibiotic (specifically, a sulfonamide combination).
  • Mechanism of Action: The two antibiotics work synergistically by blocking two sequential steps in the bacterial production of folic acid, a vital nutrient needed for bacteria to grow and multiply. This dual action kills the bacteria and prevents the infection from spreading effectively.
  • “DS” Designation: “DS” stands for Double Strength, indicating that it is twice as strong as the regular strength (SS – Single Strength) tablets.
