Dapasmart 10mg Tablet is a prescription medication containing dapagliflozin 10 mg, used primarily to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps control blood sugar levels and offers significant cardiovascular and renal protective benefits.
Key Information
  • Active Ingredient: Each tablet contains dapagliflozin 10 mg.
  • Mechanism of Action: Dapagliflozin is a Sodium-Glucose Co-Transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that works by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, leading to the excretion of excess sugar through urine. This helps lower blood sugar levels and can result in modest weight loss and a small reduction in blood pressure.
  • Uses:
    • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, along with diet and exercise.
    • To reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
    • To reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure.
    • To slow the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults with reduced kidney function.
  • Administration: The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, once daily, with or without food. It is important to take it at the same time each day to maintain a consistent effect.
Potential Side Effects
Common side effects are generally mild and may include:
  • Genital fungal infections (e.g., vaginal yeast infections, penile infections).
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs), which may present as painful or frequent urination, or back pain.
  • Increased frequency of urination.
  • Nausea, headache, and dizziness.
  • Diarrhea (more common in combination with Metformin).
Rare but serious side effects include diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and severe dehydration.
Warnings and Precautions
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: It is generally not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and breastfeeding is not advised.
  • Kidney/Liver Issues: The medication is not recommended for patients with severe kidney problems or those on dialysis. Use with caution if you have liver issues.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Avoid excessive alcohol intake, as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or a serious condition called lactic acidosis (especially if also on Metformin).
  • Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, especially diuretics (water pills) or insulin, as dose adjustments may be needed to avoid low blood pressure or hypoglycemia.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and reduce the risk of dehydration and UTIs.
