The empagliflozin 10 mg tablet, commonly known by the brand name Jardiance, is a prescription medication primarily used to treat type 2 diabetesheart failure, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). It belongs to a class of drugs called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.
Key Information
  • Active Ingredient: Empagliflozin 10 mg
  • Brand Names: Jardiance (originator brand), Gibtulio, Empabite, Empaverse, and various generics
  • Mechanism of Action: It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, which prevents glucose from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream and instead causes it to be eliminated through the urine. This process also helps the body get rid of excess salt and water, reducing the workload on the heart and protecting kidney function.
  • Dosage: The usual dose for most indications is 10 mg once a day in the morning, with or without food.
  • Prescription: This is a prescription-only medication and should not be used without consulting a doctor.
Medical Uses
Empagliflozin 10 mg is approved for several conditions in adults and some pediatric patients (age 10+) with type 2 diabetes:
  • Type 2 Diabetes: As an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control.
  • Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: To lower the risk of cardiovascular death in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
  • Heart Failure: To reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure.
  • Chronic Kidney Disease: To reduce the risk of worsening kidney function (eGFR decline), end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization.
Common Side Effects
Most side effects are generally mild and resolve as the body adjusts to the medication:
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Female genital yeast infections (vaginal mycosis)
  • Increased urination or thirst
  • Runny or stuffy nose and sore throat (nasopharyngitis)
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially when used with other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas
Important Precautions
  • Type 1 Diabetes: Empagliflozin is not for the treatment of type 1 diabetes, as it may increase the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
  • Dehydration: The medication can cause fluid loss. Stay well-hydrated, especially during hot weather or physical activity.
  • Kidney Function: Renal function should be assessed before starting treatment and monitored periodically during therapy.
  • Surgery: Inform your doctor or dentist if you are having surgery, as the medicine may need to be stopped at least 3 days prior.
  • Alcohol: Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and ketoacidosis.
Always follow your doctor’s instructions precisely regarding dosage, duration, and lifestyle modifications (diet and exercise) to manage your condition effectively and safely.
