Griseofulvin 250 mg tablets are an oral antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails when topical treatments are ineffective or inappropriate. This medication requires a prescription.
Key Information
  • Primary Use: Griseofulvin is used to treat various fungal infections, including ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and fungal infections of the scalp (tinea capitis) and nails (tinea unguium).
  • Mechanism: It works by binding to keratin, a protein in the skin, hair, and nails, and preventing the fungus from growing and multiplying in new cells.
  • Administration: The tablets should be swallowed whole (not crushed or chewed) and taken with food, preferably a high-fat meal (e.g., whole milk, ice cream, or a cheeseburger), to help the body absorb the medicine more effectively.
  • Dosage & Duration: The dose and duration are determined by a doctor based on the type and severity of the infection. Treatment can range from 2–4 weeks for skin infections to 6–12 months for toenail infections. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment to prevent the infection from returning.
Important Precautions and Warnings
  • Medical Supervision: Use this medication only under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
  • Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Griseofulvin, as it can cause adverse reactions like excessive drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and headaches.

Women of childbearing age should use effective birth control during and for at least one month after treatment. Men should use contraception for six months after the last dose before fathering a child.
  • Sun Sensitivity: This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight (photosensitivity). Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen when outdoors.
