Herpes is a common viral infection from the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), causing painful blisters or sores, typically around the mouth (oral herpes, often HSV-1, known as cold sores) or genitals (genital herpes, often HSV-2, a sexually transmitted infection), though HSV-1 can also cause genital herpes, and HSV-2 can cause oral soresSpread by skin-to-skin contact, it’s treatable with antiviral drugs that manage outbreaks but doesn’t cure the lifelong infection, which stays dormant in nerve tissue and can reactivate with triggers like stress or low immunity, causing recurring, sometimes mild, symptoms like tingling, itching, fever, or body aches.

Types of Herpes
Symptoms
  • Early signs: Tingling, itching, burning, redness, or pain in the affected area.
  • Outbreak: Small, painful blisters or ulcers that crust over and heal.
  • First outbreak (primary infection): Can be more severe, with fever, body aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Recurring outbreaks: Often less severe and shorter than the first.
Transmission
  • Primarily spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected area, especially during an outbreak, via kissing (oral) or sexual contact (genital).
  • Can be spread even when no sores are visible (asymptomatic shedding).
  • Not spread through toilet seats, bedding, or touching objects.
Management
  • No Cure: The virus remains in the body for life.
  • Medications: Antiviral drugs (like acyclovir, valacyclovir) can reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks and speed healing.
  • Triggers: Stress, illness, fatigue, and menstruation can trigger outbreaks.
