A gel containing Linseed Oil BP 3.0% w/w, Diclofenac Sodium 1% w/w, Methyl Salicylate IP 10% w/w, Menthol IP 5% w/w, and Benzyl Alcohol IP 1% w/w is a topical analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication used for relief from various types of muscle and joint pain. It is available under various brand names, such as Locoflam Gel and Swasth Pain Relief Gel.
Common Uses
This gel is primarily used for external application to alleviate pain and inflammation associated with musculoskeletal conditions. Specific uses include:
  • Musculoskeletal pain: Effective for general muscle aches, strains, and sprains.
  • Joint pain: Helps manage pain, swelling, and stiffness from conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Back and neck pain: Provides relief from low back pain, stiff neck, and sciatica.
  • Sports injuries: Used to help recovery from sports-related injuries and bruises.
How It Works
The combination of ingredients provides multi-modal pain relief:
  • Diclofenac Sodium: A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces pain and swelling by blocking the production of pain- and inflammation-causing chemical messengers (prostaglandins).
  • Methyl Salicylate: Acts as a counter-irritant, first causing a cooling sensation and then a warming effect to distract from deeper pain signals.
  • Menthol: Provides an immediate cooling and soothing sensation that also helps relieve pain and enhances the penetration of other drugs.
  • Linseed Oil: Possesses anti-inflammatory properties (due to omega-3 fatty acids) and helps reduce swelling and improve blood circulation in the affected area, while also enhancing the absorption of diclofenac through the skin.
  • Benzyl Alcohol: Included as a preservative and has mild local anesthetic properties that help relieve superficial skin pain.
