Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO₄) is a versatile mineral salt with several medical, health, and even agricultural uses. It’s available in various forms, including oral solutions, injections, and the well-known Epsom salts for topical use.
Medical Uses
Under medical supervision, Magnesium Sulphate is used to treat serious conditions:
  • Magnesium Deficiency (Hypomagnesemia): Replenishes low levels of magnesium in the blood, which is essential for proper nerve and muscle function.
  • Seizure Management: Used to prevent and control seizures in pregnant women with severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy).
  • Cardiac Arrhythmias: Can treat certain irregular heart rhythms.
  • Acute Nephritis: Used in pediatric patients for acute nephritis.
  • Laxative: The oral form is an osmotic laxative used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation, indigestion, and heartburn. It works by drawing water into the intestines to soften stools and promote bowel movements.
Other Health & Home Uses
  • Soaking Solution (Epsom Salts): When dissolved in warm water, it is used topically to relieve minor sprains, bruises, muscle aches, joint stiffness, and tired feet.
  • Gardening: It is also used as a fertilizer to correct magnesium deficiency in the soil and improve plant growth.
Important Precautions
  • Medical Guidance: For most medical uses (especially intravenous or intramuscular forms), it must be administered by a healthcare professional. Oral use as a laxative or topical use as a soak can be done without a prescription, but instructions should be followed carefully.
  • Kidney Impairment: Use with extreme caution in patients with kidney problems, as impaired kidney function can lead to a buildup of magnesium to toxic levels in the body.
  • Severe Symptoms: Do not use the laxative form if you have severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or a bowel obstruction.
  • Side Effects: Common side effects can include stomach upset, diarrhea, flushing (a sense of warmth), sweating, and drowsiness.
  • Pregnancy: While used for eclampsia management under supervision, oral magnesium sulphate is generally not recommended during pregnancy.
It is always advisable to consult a doctor before using magnesium sulphate, particularly in pregnancy, if you have existing health conditions, or if you are taking other medications.
