Mupicip Ointment is a prescription topical antibiotic used to treat various bacterial skin infections like impetigo, recurring boils, and infected cuts or wounds. Its active ingredient is mupirocin (2% w/w).
Key Information
  • Active Ingredient: Mupirocin (2% w/w).
  • Mechanism of Action: Mupirocin works by stopping the production of essential proteins that bacteria need to survive and grow. This action effectively kills the bacteria and prevents the infection from spreading.
  • Uses: It is prescribed for localized bacterial skin infections, including:
    • Impetigo (a highly contagious skin infection with red sores or itchy patches)
    • Folliculitis (infection of the hair follicles)
    • Furunculosis (pus-filled bumps under the skin/boils)
    • Infections in small cuts, wounds, or abrasions
    • Infected eczema and dermatitis (to prevent bacterial infections)
  • Administration:
    • For external use only.
    • Clean and dry the affected area of the skin thoroughly before applying.
    • Apply a thin layer of the ointment using a clean cotton swab or fingertip to the affected area, generally 2-3 times daily, or as directed by a doctor.
    • Wash hands before and after application.
    • A dressing or plaster can be applied over the treated area if advised by the doctor.
    • The full course of treatment (typically up to 10 days) must be completed, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cleared.
Potential Side Effects and Precautions
  • Common Side Effects: Most side effects are temporary and localized, including itching, a burning or stinging sensation, redness, rash, or pain at the application site.
  • Precautions:
    • Prescription Required: Mupicip Ointment is a prescription medication.
    • Avoid Contact: Do not apply in or near the eyes, nose, or mouth. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
    • Open Wounds: Avoid using on large open wounds or severely burnt skin without consulting a doctor first.
