Sulfasalazine (500 mg) is a prescription aminosalicylate and disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) primarily used to reduce inflammation in the body.
Description
  • Mechanism: It works by blocking chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause inflammation.
  • Formulations: Available as immediate-release or enteric-coated (delayed-release) tablets. Delayed-release tablets are coated to protect the stomach and release the drug directly into the intestines.
Key Benefits
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Treats and manages flare-ups of Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease by healing the gut lining and reducing symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal pain.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Slows disease progression and reduces joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.
  • Other Conditions: Used for psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
Directions for Use
  • Administration: Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water. Avoid crushing, breaking, or chewing enteric-coated tablets.
  • Timing: Taking the medication after meals or with a light snack may help reduce stomach upset.
  • Hydration: Maintaining adequate fluid intake is important to help prevent kidney stones or crystals in the urine.
Precautions
  • Allergies: This medication should not be used by individuals with allergies to sulfa drugs, aspirin, or other salicylates.
  • Monitoring: Regular blood and urine tests are typically required to monitor liver, kidney, and blood cell health during treatment.
  • Sun Sensitivity: Sulfasalazine can increase sensitivity to sunlight, raising the risk of severe sunburn. It is recommended to wear protective clothing and use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Color Changes: This medication may cause a harmless orange-yellow discoloration of urine or skin and can permanently stain soft contact lenses.
  • Male Fertility: Sulfasalazine can temporarily lower sperm count in men; fertility usually returns to normal within 2–3 months after discontinuing the drug.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: It is important to consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding. Sulfasalazine may interfere with folic acid absorption, and folic acid supplements are often recommended. Breastfeeding should be avoided if the infant develops diarrhea.
  • Contraindications: This medication is not for use in individuals with intestinal or urinary blockages or porphyria.
