Ondansetron 4 mg orally disintegrating tablets (ODT) are a prescription antiemetic medication used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery.

How to Take It

  3. Gently remove the tablet and immediately place it on top of your tongue.
  4. It will dissolve in seconds and can be swallowed with your saliva.
  5. It can be taken with or without food. 
Common Uses
Ondansetron ODT is FDA-approved for: 
  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV): Used for moderately to highly emetogenic chemotherapy regimens.
  • Radiation-induced nausea and vomiting: Used for patients receiving total body or abdominal radiation.
  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV): Used for prevention after surgery. 
Potential Side Effects and Warnings
Common side effects often include headache, constipation, or fatigue. 
Serious side effects are rare, but include: 
  • Heart rhythm changes: It may cause QT prolongation, a rare heart rhythm problem. Patients with heart conditions or electrolyte imbalances (low potassium or magnesium) should be monitored.
  • Serotonin Syndrome: A potentially life-threatening condition that can occur, especially when combined with other serotonergic drugs like certain antidepressants or migraine medications. Symptoms include agitation, hallucinations, rapid heart rate, and muscle stiffness.
  • Masking of intestinal blockage: It may mask symptoms of a progressive ileus (bowel blockage) after abdominal surgery.
  • Allergic reactions: Seek emergency help if you experience a rash, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
  • Phenylketonuria (PKU): The ODT formulation contains phenylalanine (a component of aspartame) and should not be used by individuals with PKU without consulting a doctor.
