Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent with antiseptic, astringent (drying), and disinfectant properties used in human medicine for various skin conditions. It is available as dark purple or almost black crystals, powder, or tablets.
Medical Uses
Potassium permanganate is used topically (on the skin) to treat conditions that are weeping, blistering, or oozing fluid, as it helps to dry the area and fight infection.
  • Infected eczema and dermatitis
  • Fungal infections of the feet, such as athlete’s foot
  • Impetigo (a bacterial skin infection)
  • Superficial wounds and leg ulcers
  • Tropical ulcers (used in conjunction with other antibiotics)
It is sometimes called “Condy’s crystals” and is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.
Important Safety Precautions
Potassium permanganate is for external use only and must always be used in a highly diluted form.
  • Never swallow the tablets, crystals, or solution, as ingestion can be fatal and cause severe internal burns, nausea, vomiting, and kidney damage.
  • Always dilute the product in water before use. Concentrated forms can cause chemical burns to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes (mouth, nose, genitals).
  • Do not use it near the eyes. If accidental contact occurs, wash eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical help immediately.
  • Wear gloves when handling the crystals, powder, or preparing the solution to prevent skin irritation and staining.
  • Consult a healthcare professional for the correct dilution ratio and duration of treatment. The British National Formulary recommends a 0.01% solution (1 part in 10,000) for most skin uses.
How to Use (Typical Method)
A common method for treating hands or feet is via soaks:
  1. Wear protective gloves.
  2. Dissolve one 400 mg tablet in 4 liters of warm water to achieve the recommended 1:10,000 dilution. Ensure the tablet is fully dissolved before use. The solution should be light pink.
  3. Soak the affected area for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Pat the area dry with a paper towel; no need to rinse with clean water.
  5. Apply any other prescribed creams or ointments afterward.
The solution will cause temporary brown staining of the skin and nails and can permanently stain fabrics and ceramic sinks/tubs.
