Primaquine Phosphate IP 15mg Tablet is a prescription antiparasitic medication used primarily to treat and prevent the relapse of malaria caused by specific parasites (Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale). It works by killing the dormant parasites in the liver, preventing future outbreaks of the disease.
Key Information
- Active Ingredient: Each tablet contains 15 mg of primaquine base (equivalent to 26.3 mg of Primaquine phosphate IP salt).
- Mechanism of Action: Primaquine is an 8-aminoquinoline compound that eliminates the tissue-stage (exoerythrocytic) infection in the liver. This action prevents the development of blood-stage parasites that are responsible for malaria relapses.
- Uses:
- Treatment of malaria caused by P. vivax and P. ovale strains.
- Prevention of malaria relapse (radical cure) after initial treatment with a blood schizonticide like chloroquine.
- In combination with clindamycin, it can be an alternative treatment for Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) in HIV patients.
- Administration: The tablet should be taken with food to minimize stomach upset and at the same time each day. It is typically a 14-day course of treatment. It is crucial to complete the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve, to prevent treatment failure and drug resistance.
Potential Side Effects and Precautions
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain/cramps, headache, dizziness, itching, and heartburn.
- Serious Side Effects: Can cause hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells) in individuals with a specific genetic condition called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. A blood test for G6PD deficiency is highly recommended before starting treatment. It may also cause heart rhythm problems or a decrease in white blood cell count.
- Precautions:
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Primaquine is generally contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it can harm the baby.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have blood disorders, heart problems, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or kidney/liver issues.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption while on this medication.
