Rosuvastatin 5 mg tablets are a lipid-lowering medication (statin) used to reduce “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides while increasing “good” cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. This action helps in preventing heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular problems, especially in individuals with high cholesterol or those at risk. 

Rosuvastatin works by inhibiting an enzyme in the liver responsible for cholesterol production. It is typically taken once daily, swallowed whole, at the same time each day, with or without food. This medication is part of a treatment plan that includes a healthy diet, exercise, weight management, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol. Regular monitoring of cholesterol and liver function is important, and diabetic patients should monitor blood sugar as it may increase slightly. 

Common side effects include muscle and joint pain, headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, and fatigue. Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (potentially myopathy or rhabdomyolysis), symptoms of liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, pale stools, dark urine), and severe allergic reactions. 

Rosuvastatin is not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding and should not be used by individuals with active or severe liver disease. Use with caution in patients with kidney problems, as dose adjustments may be necessary. It can interact with other medications, such as certain immunosuppressants and anti-HIV drugs; inform your doctor about all medications and supplements being taken.
