The Salmeterol 50 mcg + Fluticasone 250 mcg Powder for Inhalation (Rotacaps) is a prescription medicine combining a long-acting bronchodilator and a corticosteroid to treat conditions like asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Active Ingredients
This medication is a combination of two active ingredients that work together to improve breathing:
  • Salmeterol (50 mcg): A long-acting beta-2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) that relaxes the muscles around the airways, helping them to stay open and making it easier for air to flow in and out of the lungs.
  • Fluticasone Propionate (250 mcg): An inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) that acts by stopping the release of chemical messengers that cause inflammation (swelling) of the airways. This reduces irritation and prevents flare-ups or attacks.
Key Uses and Benefits
The combination is designed for the long-term management and prevention of symptoms in adults and children (usually over 4 years of age) with respiratory diseases:
  • Treatment of Asthma: It helps prevent the onset of asthma attacks, reducing wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness. It is a controller medication and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks.
  • Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): It helps the airways in the lungs stay open, relieving symptoms like tightness in the chest and making daily activities easier.
  • Improved Pulmonary Function: The combined action of widening airways and reducing inflammation helps to significantly improve overall lung function.
Potential Side Effects and Precautions
Common Side Effects:
  • Headache
  • Throat irritation or soreness, cough, and hoarseness of voice
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fungal infections in the mouth (oral thrush); this can be prevented by rinsing the mouth with water and spitting it out after each use.
  • Increased heart rate (palpitations) or tremors.
  • Musculoskeletal (bone, muscle, or joint) pain.
Important Precautions:
  • Prescription Only: This is a prescription medicine and must be used under a doctor’s supervision.
  • Correct Technique: Rotacaps must be used with a specific device called a Rotahaler for inhalation; they must not be swallowed.
  • Not a Rescue Inhaler: It is a maintenance medicine for regular use, not for sudden breathing problems or acute attacks. A separate rescue inhaler should be used for immediate relief.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have heart, liver, or kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, or existing infections, as the medication may require caution or monitoring.
  • Do Not Stop Abruptly: Do not stop taking the medicine even if you feel well, as symptoms may return and worsen.
