Sodium Chloride Injection (NS) is a sterile salt solution (typically 0.9% concentration, known as normal saline) used for fluid and electrolyte replacement, rehydration, and as a diluent for other medications. It is administered intravenously by a healthcare professional.
Primary Uses
  • Fluid Replacement: It is used for short-term fluid replacement to treat hypovolemia (decreased blood volume) resulting from dehydration, trauma, surgery, or other medical conditions.
  • Electrolyte Balance: The injection helps restore and maintain the body’s normal salt (sodium and chloride) balance, which is crucial for nerve and muscle function, hydration, and supporting blood pressure.
  • Medication Dilution: NS 0.9% sodium chloride injection serves as a compatible diluent or solvent for the safe and effective intravenous administration of other medications.
  • Irrigation: It can be used as a sterile solution to cleanse wounds, body cavities, or to flush intravenous (IV) lines and catheters to prevent clot formation and maintain patency.
Administration and Safety
NS is administered intravenously under the supervision of a healthcare professional in a clinical setting; it should not be self-administered. The appropriate dosage and rate depend on the patient’s age, weight, clinical condition, and laboratory results.
Important Precautions:
  • Inform your doctor if you have pre-existing conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease, high blood pressure, or liver problems, as these may require dose adjustments or caution during treatment.
  • Report any swelling (especially in hands, ankles, or feet), trouble breathing, or unusual tiredness immediately, as these can be signs of fluid overload.
Common Side Effects
Most side effects are generally mild and resolve as the body adjusts to the medication.
  • Injection site reactions: Pain, swelling, and redness at the site of injection.
  • Systemic effects: Fever, tremors, chills, and hypotension (low blood pressure).
More serious, but less common, side effects can occur with fluid or sodium overload, such as severe headache, confusion, seizures, muscle cramps, and swelling of the body (edema).
