The ABD Suspension is a prescription anti-parasitic medicine used to treat various worm and parasitic infections in the stomach and intestines. It contains albendazole (200 mg/5 ml) as its active ingredient.
Key Uses and Benefits
ABD Suspension works by keeping the worms from absorbing sugar (glucose), which depletes their energy levels and eventually kills them for elimination from the body.
  • Intestinal Worms: Treats common infections caused by roundworms, hookworms, pinworms, threadworms, and whipworms.
  • Systemic Infections: Also effective for managing more serious infections caused by tapeworm larvae that affect the brain (neurocysticercosis), liver, or lungs (cystic hydatid disease).
  • Deworming: Widely used for the deworming treatment, particularly in children.
Important Precautions
  • Prescription Required: This is a prescription medication and should be taken strictly as advised by a doctor.
  • Complete the Course: Do not stop taking the medicine even if symptoms subside, to ensure all parasites are killed and to prevent re-infection or drug resistance.
  • Administration: Shake the bottle well before use. It is best to take the suspension with a fat-containing meal (like milk) to enhance absorption.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: It is not recommended during pregnancy and women of childbearing potential should use contraception during and for at least one month after treatment due to potential harm to the fetus.
  • Liver Function: The medication may elevate liver enzymes; regular monitoring of liver function tests may be recommended by your doctor, especially if you have pre-existing liver disease.
Potential Side Effects
Most side effects are generally mild and temporary:
