Uses
This solution is an alpha-adrenergic agonist that works by decreasing the production of aqueous humour (fluid in the eye) and increasing fluid drainage, thereby reducing pressure in the eye.
- Glaucoma: It is used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma, helping prevent optic nerve damage and potential blindness.
- Ocular Hypertension: It treats elevated eye pressure in patients with ocular hypertension, which helps in preventing complications such as vision changes or vision loss.
Common Side Effects
Most side effects are temporary and do not require medical attention, but consult a doctor if they persist or worsen.
- Eye-related: Eye itching, burning sensation, redness (conjunctival hyperemia), irritation, dry eyes, and blurred or abnormal vision.
- General bodily effects: Dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, and fatigue.
Safety and Usage
- For external use only: Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface (including the eye) to avoid contamination.
- Contact Lenses: Remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
- Driving/Machinery: Use caution before driving or operating machinery, as the solution may cause drowsiness, blurred vision, or abnormal vision, especially at night.
- Interactions: Avoid alcohol consumption while using this medicine, as it may increase drowsiness. Inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking, especially monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants.
- Pediatric Use: It is not recommended for children under 17 years of age.
- Storage: Store at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. Discard the solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy.
