A syrup containing Cetirizine Hydrochloride (5 mg), Dextromethorphan HBr (10 mg), and Phenylephrine (2.5 mg) per 5ml is a combination medication used to treat symptoms of the common cold, flu, and allergies. This is a prescription-only medication in India and works by relieving symptoms such as dry cough, sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion.
Note that some formulations might contain additional ingredients like menthol.
Uses and Benefits
This syrup provides multi-symptom relief by combining an antihistamine, a cough suppressant, and a decongestant.
  • Relieves allergy symptoms: Cetirizine works by blocking histamine, a substance involved in allergic reactions, which helps reduce symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes.
  • Suppresses cough: Dextromethorphan acts on the brain’s cough center to decrease the urge to cough, providing relief from dry, non-productive coughs.
  • Clears nasal congestion: Phenylephrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages, easing a stuffy nose and making breathing easier.
