Esomeprazole 40 mg (EC) and Domperidone 30 mg (SR) capsules are a prescription medication used primarily to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and functional dyspepsia. This combination helps manage symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, stomach pain, and nausea by reducing stomach acid and improving gut motility.
Key Information
  • Uses: Treatment of GERD (acid reflux), stomach and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and relief from associated symptoms like nausea, vomiting, bloating, and fullness of the stomach.
  • Mechanism: Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Domperidone is a prokinetic agent that increases the movement and contractions of the stomach and intestines, helping food move through the digestive tract more easily and reducing the backflow of stomach contents into the food pipe.
  • Dosage & Administration: The capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, ideally in the morning and on an empty stomach, at least 30 to 60 minutes before a meal. Do not crush, chew, or break the capsule.
  • Prescription: This medication typically requires a doctor’s prescription.
Potential Side Effects
Common side effects often do not require medical attention and may resolve over time:
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Flatulence (gas)
  • Dizziness or sleepiness
More serious, but rare, side effects can include irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias), especially in patients over 60 years old or with pre-existing heart conditions. Long-term use may also increase the risk of bone fractures and deficiencies in minerals like magnesium and Vitamin B12.
Important Precautions
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor about any existing heart, liver, or kidney problems.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: This combination is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks, as determined by a doctor.
  • Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol, as it can increase stomach acid production and worsen symptoms.
  • Driving: The medication may cause dizziness or affect alertness; do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Diet: Lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding spicy, fatty, or acidic foods and eating smaller, more frequent meals, can help manage symptoms.
Always consult with a healthcare professional for proper usage, dosage, and to address any concerns regarding this medication.
